The camera test reports several numbers. Here is what each one means and why it matters for your calls, streams and recordings.
Resolution is the number of pixels the camera delivers, written as width x height. 720p (1280x720) is the floor for video calls, 1080p (1920x1080) is the clear-call standard, and 4K (3840x2160) is only useful for streaming or recording if your platform and connection support it. Most call apps cap you at 1080p anyway.
Frames per second is how many images the camera sends each second. 30 FPS is smooth enough for normal calls; 60 FPS looks noticeably sharper when you move. Below 24 FPS the picture looks jerky. The camera test measures real FPS, which can be lower than the camera's rated FPS when the USB port, lighting or CPU can't keep up.
Megapixels describe the sensor's maximum pixel count, not what you see on screen. A 1080p picture is about 2 megapixels. Higher megapixel sensors (4MP, 8MP) give more detail when you crop or zoom, but megapixels alone don't guarantee a better image. Lens quality, sensor size and lighting matter more than the number.
Field of view is how wide an angle the lens captures. A narrow FoV (60-70 degrees) frames one person tightly with less background noise. A wide FoV (90 degrees or more) fits a group or a room but can distort the edges (the fish-eye look). For solo calls, narrower is usually better.
Aspect ratio is the shape of the picture: 16:9 is widescreen (the call standard), 4:3 is squarer (older cameras). The camera test shows which one your webcam is delivering, because a 4:3 image sent to a 16:9 call gets stretched, cropped or pillarboxed.
Facing mode tells you which camera is active: 'user' (front-facing, for selfies and calls) or 'environment' (rear-facing). This mostly matters on phones and tablets, where the rear camera is usually higher quality but points the wrong way for a video call.

A dark or grainy image is almost always a lighting problem. Face a window or put a soft lamp behind your screen so the light falls on your face. Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you, which turns you into a silhouette.
Raise the laptop or webcam so the lens is level with your eyes. A camera that looks up at you is unflattering; one that looks down flattens you. Eye-level framing looks natural and professional on every call.
A smudge on a laptop or phone camera softens the whole image and adds haze. Wipe the lens with a microfiber cloth. It sounds obvious, but it's the single fastest way to make a webcam test look sharper.
A cluttered or moving background distracts and can confuse some call apps' background removal. Use a plain wall, a bookshelf, or your platform's blur or virtual background for a cleaner, more focused shot.
Windows and macOS both let you set a default camera and, on some drivers, exposure and white balance. Make sure the right camera is selected and that any 'auto' exposure isn't set too dark. Then re-run the camera test.
